WK 14 Visual Design Meaning

a.

b. The first one is a example representation visual design meaning. This oil painting gives the visual message of village life through how we recognize the environment of this painting. We saw this oil paint and through recognize what is reporting back to us. It is direct reporting the life and environment of village. It carries large amount of information through representation. The level of categorization is representing the village cottages.
The second one is a example of abstract. Abstract is a process of distillation. It reduces the meaning in multiple factors and only the most typical will be represented. In this case, it is the bird nest. The shape of bird nest is most typical and thus represented. The abstraction directed connect to our visual perception. Our perception interpreted the image and in this case, we interpreted as the look of a bird's nest. This example is a concept base abstraction, which it is base on bird's nest.
The third example is symbol. This symbol suggests the meaning of peace. Symbol often suggest meaning from its form. The peace sign is taken from the form of dove and olive branch. Symbol can be very dynamic in meaning. The peace sign also sometimes represent the symbol of hippie movement due to its vast culture dependant in the 60s' and 70s'. The peace sign is also widely use in nuclear disarm campaign.

Wk 13 Visual Techniques

1.

Unity

2.
simplicity

The first example is a furniture unit designed by Brazilian designer Roberta Rimme. At first, I thought this design was best described of its simplicity. But if I look close enough, this furniture set's simplicity is coming from the unity of the different furnitures. The TV set combine with the sofa, dvd cabin (front & side), and use the back for desk and laptop. The unity creates the simplicity in this design. It is contrasted with fragmentation, which you won't see any broken pieces in this design.
The second example is a wine pouring glass. It is simple and clean design. It is contrasted with complication, which you won't see in this wine pouring glass. The design makes you feel that there is no hassel and hectic and just simply: pour.

WK 11 Contrast

1.

I found this product under the google search term of "cool product". It uses a very strong contrast of color of black woofer rims with white background on the both side of the speakers. The pink rim around the speaker units are also nicely color contrast with the white background. The main unit volume control in pink is also color contrast with the white background color. The speakers are juxtaposition to each others that are contrast in scale. The main unit (center) is the biggest out of the three. The two side speakers are smaller than the main unit in the center and they are the same size. I won't able to judge the scale in size without big and small, and also if there are not juxtaposition and place side by side to each others.

2.

I found this printer has poorly contrast. The keys is numbering in white that contrast with the black background. The white numbering is so small in contrast with the black background plates that is very vague and not clear for the user to use. The grey display screen is surrounded with the black background plate that is poorly contrasted with each others. The switches on the left is color in black that is also poorly contrast with the black plates. The numbering pad on the right is also in black with the black backing plates that is poorly contrast in color.

Find TWO (2) examples of design that relate to your planned course of study/profession, i.e. industrial design or visual communication design. ONE design example must demonstrate an effective use of contrast contributing to a successful design. The OTHER design example must demonstrate a lack of or poor use of contrast contributing to a failed design. For each of the 2 examples, post at least one image and at least 6 sentences that identify and explain how the use of contrast is contributing to success or failure. Make sure you identify the post with "Week 11 CONTRAST" at the top of the post.Note: The contrast may be operating in ANY aspect of the designed work, but you must identify what aspect that is. NOTE: This exercise is an opportunity to apply the concepts and terms from the reading and lecture and thereby show that you understand them. Go over the reading and lecture BEFORE selecting your images and that will make it easier to discuss them.

Movement

The dove has implied movement that goes from left to right in this poster. The sense of movement is created by the red and blue streamline that drag behind the dove. It also has the movement of persistence of vision that was created by the red and blue color around the dove's head and body.

There are many implied movement going on in this poster. The elephant has implied movement that make it seemed like it is rolling the rainbow colored ball. The moose has implied movement that seemed like it is walking on the rainbow. The butterflies flying in the top left corner has a sense of implied movement of flying as well. Lastly, the rainbow also has implied movement that seemed to move to the top right corner from the center.

Depth Preception

This is a picture that I found using google image search under the term of "illusion of space". They use mirrors on the 3 ceiling windows that creates a illusion that gives out a sense of extra space. They are actually just mirrors' reflection from the living room ceiling. The room that you see on the right hand side is just a coat closet. The mirrors' reflection also extends the linear perspective from the horizon line. It makes the ceiling seems to be continued to the next room, but actually 2/3 of space you saw in that room is just solid concrete. The TV and the displays is using visual element of familiar size to compare with the everyday objects. It gives you a sense of scale to compare with the environment. The small and narrow display cabinet gives out a feeling of huge extra space if you compare to the huge unused wall on the left of the cabinet. Discrimination of perception plays a key roll in this photo, which it's widely use in creating of space in this case.

Tone & Color

This Dark Knight poster uses a darker tone. The intensity of light is very limited. The light only presence around Joker, Batman, and Two Face's faces. The light goes around their faces and reflects very minimal of light. We see this poster is dark because it overlaps what is light.
I find Two Face very interesting. He is holding his campaign buckle in a circle shape. The circle represents endlessness, warmth, and protection. This fits his roll as a city attorney which protect his people by fighting crime. Although later, he is all changed to someone else.
The hue in this poster is rather simple but good. Batman is in black overall. Black has a meaning of mystery and power that fits his roll in the movie. Joker has the color of red on his lip and the card that he is holding. The color of red Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength and power. Red also represents love, but definitely not in Joker's case.
The color of red, white, and blue has the meaning of liberty and freedom. You can see this on the campaign buckle that Two Face is holding. It goes well with the shape of circle that has the meaning of protection. And on top of that, the circle represents endlessness that illustrates the point to that we all hope freedom and liberty can be everlasting.

Product Design - Magic Wheel

This cool product is called the Magic Wheel. I also included a picture if you wonder how to ride this thing. The color or so called the hue that most eye catching is the red located in outer part of the frame. Red is one of the three primary colors in the color structure. The red that they use had very bright tone and close to pure red in the color saturation that contains minimal of grey. The wheel in circle shape is one of the three basic shapes. The circle shape represents endlessness, warmth, and protection. In this product, you can sense the scale between the front wheel and the rear wheel. The rear wheel is so small that you can tell the front wheel is way bigger than the rear. It clear demonstrate the face that there can be no large without small.
